Harvia Sauna Heaters: Which Model Is Right for Your Room?

Harvia's electric heaters come in several ranges we stock, plus a family of wood stoves. KIP is the one most people buy, at 4.5 to 8 kW. Cilindro is the pillar that holds a lot of stone. The Wall suits narrow rooms. Vega Compact fits closet-sized cabins. Wood stoves start at 16 kW. Pick by adjusted room volume first, then by where you want the controls.

• Small room, simplest install. Vega Compact 3500, 70 to 175 adjusted cu ft, controls built in.
• Typical backyard room. A Harvia KIP at 6 or 8 kW, wall hung, floor left clear.
• Best steam. A Cilindro electric pillar. It holds more than four times as much stone as a KIP at the same output.

Which Harvia heater should you buy?

Every Harvia sauna heater is rated in adjusted cubic feet, not floor area. Adjusted cubic feet is width times depth times height in feet. Then you add 45 cu ft for every square foot of glass, tile, concrete or stone, and 15 cu ft for every square foot of exposed log wall. A 6 by 7 ft room with a 7 ft ceiling is 294 raw cu ft. KIP W or KIP B: do you want the control on the heater or on the wall?

This is the choice most Harvia buyers get stuck on, and Harvia doesn't explain it anywhere obvious. The KIP is the only Harvia residential line sold both ways: W means the controls aren't on the heater and you add a Xenio CX170. B means the thermostat and timer are built into the heater body. Same 44 lb stone capacity, same kW steps, same wall bracket.

The B looks cheaper and often is. A KIP60B is $1,195 all in. A KIP60W at $1,010 plus the CX170 at $1,035 comes to $2,045. That gap is the whole decision, so it's worth knowing what the extra money buys.

With a B, the controls sit inside the hot room on the heater. You walk in to switch it on, then wait. You can't preheat from the house and you can't start it from a phone. With a W and a Xenio, the control mounts outside the hot room, so the sauna is at temperature when you open the door, and the Xenio is Wi-Fi capable. If your sauna is at the end of the garden in February, that's worth more than $850. If it's a spare room you walk past anyway, it isn't.

The rest of the range works the same way. The Wall and Vega Compact have built-in controls, so there's nothing else to buy and no remote start. Why do two 6 kW Harvia heaters hold different amounts of stone?

Here's the part that surprises people. The KIP60W and the Cilindro PC60E are both 6 kW. The KIP holds 44 lb of stones. The Cilindro holds 200 lb. The electrical load is the same, but the Cilindro carries four and a half times as much stone.

Kilowatts heat the air. Stone stores the heat and gives it back as steam. A 44 lb basket comes up to temperature quickly, and it's light enough to hang on a stud wall. But it gives up its heat in two or three ladlefuls and then needs time to recover. A 200 lb column takes longer to heat up. It gives back a softer steam that holds up to several pours in a row.

The downside is weight and money. The PC60E weighs 35.3 lb empty and about 235 lb loaded, so it sits on the floor, not the wall. Stones are separate in every case. The KIP60W needs one 44 lb box of Harvia AC3000 at $59. The PC60E needs five, so budget $295 before the heater is usable. Our sauna rocks guide covers the formula and when to replace them.

Which control does my Harvia need?

You can't mix and match. The control is matched to the heater family and to the load it has to switch. Harvia publishes that pairing on its own site. Here's the short version for the controls we stock.

There are two traps here. The CX170 is a KIP control and won't run a Cilindro. The FX45, even though it's the top Fenix, is listed for Virta Pro alone, so don't buy it as a general upgrade. What about Harvia wood stoves?

Harvia's sauna stoves start at about 16 kW. That sounds huge next to a 6 kW electric, until you remember that a fire has no thermostat. The Legend 150 at $2,089 is the heavy cast-iron top model. The Linear 16 Black at $961 and the M3 at $969 are the plain steel models. The Cilindro 16 is the same pillar shape in a wood-fired version, and it holds 264 lb of stones.

There are two things to know before you commit. Harvia's wood stoves are CE and EAC marked, not UL listed, so confirm with your building department and insurer. And they use a 115 mm (4.5 in) European flue, which a standard 6 in US chimney won't meet without the Harvia WZ115155 adapter. What should you check before you order?

• Clearances. Every model has its own minimums to walls, benches and ceiling, given in the installation manual. Check them against your framing before the benches go in.
• Stones are always separate. No Harvia heater ships with them. Match the grade to the model: the AC3000 family in 44 lb boxes for most, and the rounded R-991 for Spirit. Browse sauna stones.
• The circuit. Every electric Harvia is hardwired on a dedicated circuit. None plug into an outlet. A licensed electrician sizes the breaker and conductors from the nameplate and manual under the current NFPA 70. Our guide to sauna heater installation covers what affects that quote.
• Wood stove flue. The 115 mm outlet needs the WZ115155 adapter to meet a 6 in US chimney. Order it with the stove.
• Marks. Harvia's KIP electrics list CE, EAC and UL on their product pages. The wood stoves list CE and EAC only.

Frequently asked questions

Do Harvia sauna heaters come with stones?

No. Stones are sold separately on every model, and the heater must never be run empty. A KIP takes one 44 lb box, a Cilindro electric takes five, and a Cilindro 16 wood stove takes six.

Does every Harvia heater need a separate control unit?

No. The Wall, Vega Compact, the KIP B models and the plain Cilindro PC models have controls built into the heater. The KIP W models and the Cilindro E models can't run without a matched Harvia control.

What is the difference between a Harvia KIP60W and a KIP60B?

Only the controls. The W is a bare heater that needs a Xenio CX170 mounted outside the room. The B has the timer and thermostat on the heater body, so you switch it on from inside the sauna.

Can a Harvia sauna heater plug into a normal outlet?

No. Every electric model is a hardwired appliance on its own dedicated circuit. A KIP60W is rated 25 A with a published 30 A line fuse, and your electrician sizes the rest.

How long does a Harvia sauna heater take to heat up?

Harvia doesn't publish a figure. A correctly sized, well-insulated room is normally ready in 30 to 60 minutes. Consistently longer than an hour usually means the heater is undersized for the adjusted cubic feet.

Which Harvia sauna heater is best for a very small room?

The Vega Compact 3500 at 3.5 kW, rated for 70 to 175 adjusted cu ft. At 11 by 11 in it's the smallest footprint in the range, and the controls are on board. The whole install is a bracket and a circuit.
